Alex Fitzpatrick’s pursuit of his first individual PGA Tour title fell short as Kristoffer Reitan secured a breakthrough victory at the Truist Championship on Sunday.

The Englishman entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Reitan, but the Norwegian surged ahead to claim a two-shot win at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Reitan, 28, carded a two-under 69 to finish at 15 under overall, while Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard and American Rickie Fowler tied for second. Fitzpatrick ended one stroke further back after a round of 73, which included a bogey and double bogey within his first three holes.

The 27-year-old recovered to level par with his fourth birdie of the day on the 13th, briefly sharing the lead. The back nine saw a four-way tie at the top, but while others stumbled, Reitan remained steady to win in just his 15th PGA Tour start.

Fitzpatrick recently won the Zurich Classic alongside his older brother Matt last month, securing a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. He also posted a top-10 finish at the Cadillac Championship. However, a second double bogey of the day on the par-three 17th proved costly.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood closed with a two-under 69 to finish tied for fifth at 11 under.

Fitzpatrick, ranked 120th in the world, told Sky Sports: “It’s still very surreal to be in contention. It’s crazy to feel disappointed, but I still am. I’m happy for Kris—he deserves it—and hopefully it’ll be mine another time.”

World number four Matt Fitzpatrick finished at one over after a final-round 72, while Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy bounced back from a 75 on Saturday to shoot a 67 and finish at five under.
