The sophomore jinx is a well-known phenomenon in sports, where standout rookies struggle to meet expectations in their second year. In the KBO League, many players have fallen victim to this slump, losing confidence under intense opponent scrutiny and targeted analysis.
However, this season, several young talents have defied the odds, emerging stronger and more impactful. Among them are Doosan Bears infielder Park Joon-soon and right-handed pitcher Choi Min-seok, both selected in the first two rounds of the 2025 rookie draft.

In his debut season, Park played 91 games, hitting .284 with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs, and 10 steals. This year, he has elevated his game, posting a .331 batting average (11th in the league), 5 homers (tied for 15th), and 26 RBIs (tied for 11th) over 36 games. His close friend and teammate Choi Min-seok has also impressed, making 7 starts and recording quality starts in 4 of them. He boasts a 3-0 record with a 2.56 ERA (4th in the league) and a .223 opponent batting average (5th). To manage his workload, Doosan removed him from the active roster on May 8 for rest and injury prevention.

Samsung Lions reliever Bae Chan-seung, who debuted in 2025, has also avoided the sophomore slump. After notching a 2-3 record with 19 holds and a 3.91 ERA in 65 games last year, he has improved to a 2-3 hold line with a 2.57 ERA in 19 appearances this season. Bae has been a key figure in Samsung’s winning streaks, appearing in five games during their seven-game win streak in April and three more during their recent eight-game run. He has not allowed a run in his last five outings since May, helping stabilize the bullpen after right-hander Lee Ho-sung underwent surgery.
LG Twins second-year pitcher Kim Young-woo is also pulling his weight. After a stellar debut campaign (66 games, 3-2, 7 holds, 1 save, 2.40 ERA), he has continued to produce in 2026 with a 1-1 record, 1 hold, and a 3.46 ERA in 15 games. His role has grown even more critical following closer Yoo Young-chan’s elbow injury.
On the other hand, some second-year players are struggling. Kiwoom Heroes left-hander Jung Hyun-woo, the first overall pick in the 2025 draft, has appeared in only one game this season due to an elbow injury. He was criticized for overuse after throwing 122 pitches in his debut last March. Hanwha Eagles flamethrower Jung Woo-joo, who recorded a 2.85 ERA in 51 games last year, has stumbled to a 7.20 ERA with 5 holds in 19 games. His season preparation was disrupted by national team duties for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, and he recently moved to the starting rotation, allowing two runs on four walks in just 1⅔ innings in his first start of the year.
