Russian tennis player Alina Korneeva failed to advance past the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, losing to Hungarian Panna Udvardy in straight sets.

The 18-year-old Russian, who entered the main draw through qualifying, was defeated by world No. 71 Panna Udvardy with a score of 2:6, 6:7 (2:7). This marked Korneeva’s first appearance in the main draw of a WTA 1000 event.
Udvardy’s next opponent will be Belgian Elise Mertens.
Korneeva, a former world No. 1 junior and the 2023 Australian Open and Roland Garros junior champion, currently sits at No. 122 in the WTA rankings.
The Rome tournament, with a prize fund of €7.22 million, will conclude on May 16. It belongs to the WTA 1000 category, second only to Grand Slams and the WTA Finals in prestige.
